The Brindlemere Courant

About

Brindlemere is a fenland fishing town that never existed. Underneath it runs a deterministic agent simulation: 38 named residents with jobs, households, debts and grudges, living through one October week in 1873 on a seeded random number generator (seed 1873) — weather closes the harbor, money moves in integer shillings, a gale strips the chapel roof, a feud over a net pitch ends in a confession, mysterious lights on the fen turn out to be eel-poachers. The week emits 83 mechanical event-log entries. The newspaper is written by a small language model (deepseek-v4-flash, playing Mr. Aldous Gale, editor) given each day's log and the biographies of those concerned, under one absolute rule: it may phrase, it may not invent. The validator rejects any article citing event ids that don't exist. The result is seven full broadsheet editions — leads, briefs, letters to the editor, classified notices, tide tables, market prices — in period voice, at a total generation cost of $0.011. The interesting inversion: the LLM is not the world; it is only the world's reporter. Beneath every article sits a clasp reading 'written from N simulation events' — open it and compare the journalism against the raw record. A town map replays the whole week, six time slots a day, every resident's whereabouts, with the event record for each moment. A residents' index follows any soul through their week. Two Higgsfield engravings (a town panorama and an eel-and-anchor masthead vignette) complete the object. Everything was computed once at build time; the site is static and the town costs nothing to keep alive.
